Thursday video

Amazing.  Philip Glass + Sesame Street= Geometry of Circles.  Kids today need more of this!  Minimalist composers and Fractal (like) math demos!  I love geometry, this is probably why…  Yep.  Nerd.

Vynl Diner… NICE.

Went to VYNL Diner recently with friends after a reading of a play.  The play happened to be quite good and my friend was pretty amazing in it… Didn’t know she could do that kinda thing, that well.  Anyway, VYNL Diner was the eating spot afterwords.  Good food, BETTER ambience (table lighting above).   The Elvis bathroom is a thing of beauty.  Seriously, not to be missed.  I am totally having a themed bathroom in my townhouse / loft.  Now I just need an actual major economic depression to hit – so I can actually afford to move on what I make… And a plague / swine flu that affects only bankers so I can have somewhere to move to.  Here’s to hopein’!?!

Resolume 3. Out of Beta

Resolume Avenue 3 Getting Started from Resolume on Vimeo.

Resolume just dropped version 3 out of beta and into the world.  Massive improvements have been promised and it looks like Bart and Edwin have been busy up in The Netherlands.  Every issue I posted about in the forums has been resolved!  Downloading now.  Can’t wait to see what they’ve done.  Now if I could just get my hands on a APC 40 with which to trigger all these massive improvements…

Netbook

I’ve had this netbook for about 4 months now. It’s an MSI Wind U100. Hackable: software and hardware. Basically everything you could possibly want in a fun little computer with wicked functions wrapped up in a tiny little package. I’ve had a few of these netbooks but the Wind is by far my favorite for general use and messing with.

I voided the warranty (bah – it’s for only one year anyway!) and I’ve upgraded the RAM swapped out the wireless card for one more to my liking. And just the other day I found out that the VDMX5 demo runs on this little guy with video out! Amazing! Resolume looked like someone passed the video out signal through a blender – but VDMX5 rocked a large 24 LCD with not even a hick-up and Audio out was right in sync. Next week I’ll try loading video from an SD card and see if that is fast enough for clips. MSI WIND + SDs for clips + Korg Nano Control / Pad – and presto I’ve got the smallest cheapest VJ set up in the world, could literally fit in my smallest messenger bag. Now if I could only build a set up that let me see everything on a 10 inch screen…

The future…now

I’ve sent many of you this video in the past but just for kicks I’ve included it here.  I’m interested in many things, not the least of which is visual performance.  As I sit inside on this rainy Monday my mind drifts to visions of what would be possible mixing a live visuals set with just my hands, conducting the video feeds…sweet.  Also the geek in me is filled with wonder of finally being able to visually navigate large data sets with ease.

Canyons

I once met a man in a cowboy hat in NYC at a lunch counter, he was visiting his daughter.  He was from Montana and couldn’t get over the deep dark canyons that NYC has created with grid-like efficiency.  He wondered how New Yorkers could stand living, as he put it: “down below” in the shadow of all that glass and steel.  Well cowboy, wherever you are I hope you are finding your open sky grand, and to you I submit this belated retort:

How to: Photography: Build a background stand (for under $70)

First off, there are many reasons I like the idea of building my own background stand:  #1  I am cheap.  #2  I like to build things.  #3  I am cheap.  I am also well aware that you can buy a cheap background stand from BH for $100 that will work well and is sturdy.  But lets face it, they are made in China by some little kid with burned hands cause he can’t afford gloves for when he tig welds with out a mask – and is going blind, but is thrilled because he can eat on that $.04 he gets for working an 18 hour day.  So I choose the higher path.  I go to Home Depot and support PVC manufacturers who pay a Mexican kid to get respiratory problems for cleaning out PVC vats for $.22 a day to keep the factory running!  Oh-Rah!  Supporting American Businesses and workers! (Note to readers in the United States, Mexico is part of America – and could possibly have a stronger economy soon – they actually make things…)

Now I’ll get to the second part.  How to build a background stand (for under $70).  Go to Home Depot.  Or Lowes.  Or where ever you get your PVC pipe.  Buy this stuff:

1.  3 pipes @ 12′ (1 1/2″ diameter pipe).

2.  10 “T” joints that will fit your pipe.

3.  8 end caps that will fit your pipe.

Take it home and cut to these lengths (or use a hacksaw at the store):

1.  Cut 2 pipes @ 7′, you’ll have 2 @ 5′ left over.  These are your tops and sides.

2.  Cut the last pipe: 8 pieces @ 11″, 6 pieces @ 4″ (1 piece @ 32″ should be left over)

Stick it all together:

The “T” joints hold it all together just like the crappy napkin sketch above shows, I was going to use elbow joints at the top like the “diagram” but they didn’t have any that day so “T” joints it was.

1.  Make the bases first with the 8 pipe pieces @ 11″ and 4 of the 6 pipe pieces @ 4″ PLUS 6 “T” joints and 8 end caps.

2.  Make the top with 4 “T” joints cutting a notch in 2 so that the crossbar (where the paper or backgrounds go) can be removed.

3.  Affix the top to the bottom bases with the 7′ lengths.

Hang a paper or background and that’s it.  Couldn’t have put this together without the help of this wonderful internet article.  The pictures are better than mine and the instructions are way more detailed.  Also I think he glued his – that was going to be another $3 and it sticks together just fine, just try twisting one of those pipes apart…yeah it’s good.  Also it has the added advantage of being able to be dissasembled for disposal when I finaly buy one of those $100 stands that fits in a bag from BH, cause that’d be awesome for the enviorment!

Slow 7

I ride the 7 train everyday now that I live in Sunnyside.  It’s great, convenient, close and I can usually beat anyone to midtown or below, if anyone lives on the UES or UWS, as most anyones do.  But the 7 isn’t without it’s occasional slowdowns.  The other day it slowed down long enough for me to take some snaps of this great graffiti covered building I see every day on my commute, but usually rocket by so I don’t get a chance to REALLY look.

Beautiful, truly. Simply gorgeous.
